Why Reddit Videos Have No Sound When Downloaded (and How to Fix It)

You saved a Reddit video and it plays without a sound. It is not your phone, and the sound is not gone: Reddit simply keeps it in a separate file.

You download a video from Reddit, open it, and it plays in silence. You turn the volume up, try another player, try another download — still nothing. The sound is not lost, and your phone is fine. It is how Reddit stores video.

Reddit keeps sound and picture apart

Videos uploaded to Reddit live on v.redd.it, and they are not stored as one file. Reddit cuts each upload into:

  • several video-only files, one per quality (for example 1080p, 720p, 480p, 360p), and
  • one audio-only file.

A small playlist file lists them all. Reddit's player reads that playlist, picks a quality that suits your connection, and plays the picture and the sound together. This is called adaptive streaming, and YouTube, Netflix and most big video sites work the same way.

The catch: when you save "the video" — from the player, from a link ending in DASH_720.mp4, with a simple browser extension — you get one of the video-only files. It is a perfectly good MP4. It just has no sound in it, because the sound was never in that file.

How to download a Reddit video with sound

You need a tool that fetches both files and joins them into one MP4. That is what FromRed.net does:

When the video really has no sound

Sometimes the silence is real. FromRed.net tells you so instead of offering an audio download that would be empty:

  • The uploader removed the sound or recorded without it.
  • It is a GIF post. Reddit turns uploaded GIFs into silent MP4s. To get it back as a GIF, use the Reddit GIF downloader.
  • The video is hosted elsewhere. A post linking to YouTube or Streamable doesn't have its video on Reddit at all; its sound is on that other site. For many Imgur links Reddit keeps a copy, sound included, and that copy is what you get.

If Reddit's own player shows a crossed-out speaker or no volume control, the video has no audio track.

Only want the sound?

The audio track on its own is what Reddit calls the sound, and you can keep just that. The Reddit to MP3 converter offers it two ways:

  • Original (M4A) — the AAC track exactly as Reddit stores it, untouched.
  • MP3 at 320, 256, 192, 128, 96 or 64 kbps, for players and editors that want MP3.

Reddit's sound is usually about 128 kbps. A 320 kbps MP3 is a perfectly fine file, but it will not sound better than its source, so 128 kbps or the original M4A is all you need.

In short

A Reddit video saved without sound is the video-only half of a pair. Download it with a tool that joins both halves, and the sound is there.
