Reddit GIF Downloader

Paste a link to a Reddit GIF and save it the way you need it: as a real .gif file that plays anywhere, or as the small looping MP4 Reddit keeps. Works for posts and comments, in HD, on any device.

Any public Reddit post, comment, share, v.redd.it or i.redd.it link. It starts on its own as soon as you paste.

How to Download GIFs from Reddit

  1. Copy the GIF's link

Tap Share under the post or the comment with the GIF and choose Copy link.

  2. Paste it into the field

The Reddit GIF downloader starts on its own and shows the animation.

  3. Choose GIF or MP4

Press GIF for a real .gif file, or MP4 for the smaller video version. Both loop.

Why Reddit GIFs Download as MP4 (and How to Get a Real .gif)

Most GIFs on Reddit are not GIF files any more. When someone uploads a GIF or a short silent clip, Reddit converts it to an MP4 — a tenth of the size and smoother to play — and the app shows that. Saving it gives you a video, which is a problem when a chat, a forum or an editor wants a .gif.

For a GIF that was uploaded as a GIF, this tool hands you the original .gif from i.redd.it. For one Reddit only keeps as video, the GIF button converts it back: a palette is built from the clip itself so the colours stay true, and the result loops forever like the original.

Download Reddit GIFs as GIF or MP4 in HD

The MP4 button gives you the animation in every size Reddit stores, up to the original resolution. The GIF is made up to 480 pixels wide at up to 15 frames a second, which keeps it sharp while staying small enough to send. Need a different size or a shorter piece? The Reddit video to GIF converter lets you pick the start, the length, the width and the frame rate.

Save GIFs from Reddit Comments

GIFs posted as replies can be saved too: copy the link to the comment (Share on the comment, then Copy link) and paste it here. The comment's GIF appears first, the post's media below it. GIFs inserted from Reddit's built-in GIF keyboard come from Giphy and are not shown to signed-out visitors, so only GIFs uploaded to Reddit can be downloaded.

Download Reddit GIFs on iPhone and Android

On iPhone, Safari saves the GIF to the Files app; Share → Save Image puts it in Photos with its animation intact. On Android it goes to Downloads and shows up in the gallery. MP4 versions save like any video.

Do Reddit GIFs Have Sound?

A GIF file never has sound — the format cannot hold any. Clips Reddit marks as GIFs are silent videos as well. If the animation you saw had sound, it is a regular video post: paste it on the Reddit video downloader to get the MP4 with its audio, or on the MP3 page for the sound alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did my Reddit GIF download as MP4?

Reddit converts most GIFs to MP4 to make them smaller. Press the GIF button here to get a real .gif — the original when one was uploaded, or a conversion from the MP4.

Can I download a Reddit GIF with sound?

A GIF can't carry sound. If the clip you saw had sound, it is a video post: use the video downloader to get it as an MP4 with audio.

How do I save a GIF from the Reddit app?

Tap Share on the post or the comment, choose Copy link, then paste it here and press GIF. On iPhone, Share → Save Image puts it in Photos.

Reddit GIF won't download — what to do?

Check that the link points at the post or comment with the GIF, and that it is public. GIFs from Reddit's GIF keyboard come from Giphy and can't be saved here; uploaded GIFs can.

Can I save an Imgur GIF posted on Reddit?

Often, yes. Reddit keeps its own copy of many GIFs and videos linked from Imgur, Gfycat or Giphy, and when it has one the card offers it, marked as Reddit's copy. When it has none, the card says where the original is.
