Get Reddit Thumbnails in HD and Full Size
The thumbnail you see in a Reddit feed is a small square of about 140 pixels. Reddit also keeps a full-size preview of every post with media, as large as the video frame or the picture itself. This Reddit thumbnail downloader always takes that full-size preview, so you get an HD cover image rather than a blurry square.
Thumbnails from Videos, Link Posts and Image Posts
For a video post the thumbnail is a frame of the video — the cover Reddit shows before you press play. For a link post it is the preview image Reddit made of the linked page or YouTube video, which is often the only way to save it, since the video itself is not on Reddit. For an image post it is a resized copy of the picture; for the original, use the image downloader.
Text posts without media have no thumbnail; the card then offers the post's text instead.
What Is a Reddit Thumbnail (Preview Image)?
Reddit makes a preview image for every post that has a picture, a video or a link with an image: it is what feeds, search results and link previews in chats display. Content creators use it as a cover when they repost a clip, writers as an illustration for a blog post, and moderators to check what a link shows.
Reddit Thumbnail Size and Format
The full-size preview matches the source: a 1920 × 1080 video gives a 1920 × 1080 thumbnail, a vertical phone video a vertical one. It downloads as JPG, which every program opens, even when Reddit would serve WEBP to a browser. The small feed thumbnail is about 140 × 140 and is only used when a post has nothing larger.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I download a thumbnail without downloading the video?
Yes. The thumbnail is a separate picture: press Download next to it and only that image is saved.
Why is the Reddit thumbnail low quality?
The thumbnail in the feed is a 140-pixel square. Here you get Reddit's full-size preview instead, as large as the video frame or the picture.
Why is my Reddit image thumbnail not showing?
Reddit makes a preview only for posts with a picture, a video or a link with an image. Text posts have none, and a just-posted video may not have one yet.
