How to Save a Reddit Thread as PDF (with Comments)

Published: · Updated:

Printing a Reddit thread from the browser gives you a mess of menus and collapsed replies. Here is how to get a clean PDF of the post and its comments instead.

A good Reddit thread is worth keeping: a recipe with three hundred tips under it, a question answered by people who know, a discussion you want to cite. Printing it from the browser is disappointing — menus, ads, sidebars, half the replies collapsed — and the app has no export at all.

Save the thread as a PDF

  1. Copy the link to the post (Share → Copy Link in the app, or the address bar).
  2. Paste it into the Reddit post downloader.
  3. Press PDF.

You get a clean document with:

  • the post's title, community, author, date, score and comment count,
  • the post's text, with its formatting — headings, lists, quotes, code, links,
  • the post's pictures (up to twenty),
  • the comments as a tree, each reply indented under the one it answers, with author, date and score.

It is laid out on numbered A4 pages, reads well on a phone, prints without cut-off text, and keeps the links clickable.

Other formats

The same buttons offer the thread in three more shapes:

Format What it is for
TXT Plain text, indented by reply level. Opens anywhere, searches easily.
Markdown For Obsidian, Notion, a wiki or a GitHub page. Replies are nested quotes.
JSON For your own scripts and research: every post and comment as data, with ids, times and scores.

How many comments are included

Reddit's own pages don't show every comment at once — long threads end in "more replies" links that load the rest on demand. The export does what those links do: it takes the 500 comments Reddit sends in one go, best first, then unfolds the replies hidden behind "more replies", a hundred at a time, up to 1,500 comments in one file.

For most threads, that is all of them. For a megathread with thousands, it is the top of the discussion and the busiest branches — usually the part worth keeping — and the document says how many replies were still folded away.

Saving a single comment

Have a link to one comment rather than the whole post? Paste that: you get the comment and its media first, then the post. If the comment has a picture, a GIF or a video in it, the comment downloader saves those too.

Keeping the media as well

The export holds pictures, but not videos. To keep a post's video with sound, its GIF or its audio, the same link works on the Reddit video downloader. A gallery's pictures come as one ZIP from the gallery downloader.

Good to know

  • Only public posts can be exported. Private and quarantined communities, and posts marked NSFW, are not supported.
  • Deleted comments appear as [deleted], just as on Reddit.
  • The text belongs to its authors. Saving it for yourself is one thing; republishing it is another — see our terms of use.
