Reddit Banner, Avatar and Icon Sizes in 2026
Published:
What size Reddit displays each picture at, measured from the pictures Reddit serves in October 2026 — and what to upload so yours stays sharp.
Reddit shows the same few pictures everywhere: your profile picture, your profile banner, a community's icon and its banners. Each has a size it is displayed at, and a size you should upload so it stays sharp. The numbers below come from the pictures Reddit itself serves, checked in October 2026.
The sizes at a glance
| Picture | Reddit displays it at | Upload at least |
|---|---|---|
| Profile picture (user icon) | 256 × 256, cropped square | 256 × 256 |
| Profile banner | 1280 × 384 | 1280 × 384, wider is fine |
| Community icon | 256 × 256, shown in a circle | 256 × 256 |
| Community banner (desktop) | full page width, served up to 4000 px wide | 1920 px wide or more |
| Community mobile banner | cropped for the app | 1920 px wide, keep the subject central |
| Old-design header (old.reddit.com) | small, e.g. 160 × 64 or 125 × 73 | as small as the design allows |
Reddit scales every picture down for phones and small screens, and it keeps your original. That is why the file you download is often larger than what you see on the page.
Profile picture
Reddit crops the profile picture to a square and serves it at 256 × 256. It is shown in a circle almost everywhere, so keep the face or logo in the middle and leave some space around it — the corners will be cut off.
If you use a Reddit avatar (the cartoon character you dress up), Reddit draws two pictures from it: the full-body avatar, a tall transparent PNG, and a head crop that serves as the profile picture.
Profile banner
The banner across the top of a profile is served at 1280 × 384 — a strip about 3.3 times as wide as it is tall. On phones and narrow windows the sides are cut off, so keep anything important in the middle third.
Community icon
A community's icon is served at 256 × 256 and shown in a circle next to its name. Older communities may also have a legacy icon from before the 2018 redesign; when it differs from the current one, both are worth keeping.
Community banners
Communities can have up to three pictures across the top:
- The desktop banner stretches across the full width of the page. Reddit serves large ones up to 4000 pixels wide; the visible height is only a few hundred pixels, so wide and short works best.
- The mobile banner is shown in the app and on phones, cropped differently from the desktop one. Many communities design it separately.
- The header image belongs to the old design that old.reddit.com still shows. It is tiny — r/pics uses one of 160 × 64, r/AskReddit 125 × 73.
Tips for sharp pictures
- Upload PNG for logos and text, JPG for photos.
- Start bigger than the minimum: Reddit scales down well and scales up badly.
- Keep the subject in the centre. Every Reddit layout crops from the edges.
- Check the result on a phone as well as a computer; the crops are different.
Downloading the pictures in full size
To keep a copy of a profile's picture, avatar and banner in the size they were uploaded in, type the username into the profile picture downloader. For a community's icon, banners and header image, type its name into the subreddit icon downloader. Both show each picture's real size on its button.
